Considering this, is it illegal for farmers to save seeds?
While saving seed and even exchanging seed with other farmers for biodiversity purposes has been a traditional practice, these practices have become illegal for the plant varieties that are patented or otherwise owned by some entity (often a corporation).
Similarly, which kind of seeds should farmers use? Every fall, grain farmers across the Midwest and beyond harvest their crops and compare which soybean or wheat varieties or corn hybrids were the best throughout the year and of course which have the best resulting yield.
One may also ask, why can't farmers save seeds?
One of the reasons that farmers choose not to save seeds from year to year is because they need special equipment to clean the seeds to get them ready to plant, and extra storage space to store the seeds from harvest until it is time to plant again. Not all farmers have this equipment or the storage space.
Where do farmers buy their seeds?
There are government authorized seed manufacturers. They produce, grade and test crop seeds before sale. So the quality of these seeds are pretty good. Then there are government distributed seed stocks.
