Then, can the pin be left in when putting?
Thanks to a rules change by the USGA, golfers will now have three options when putting in 2019: Remove the pin completely, have someone tend the pin, or leave the pin in and unattended. If your putt hits the pin in the third scenario, there's no penalty (formerly two strokes or loss of hole).
Also, does putting with the flag in help? While Mase's research is preliminary, the takeaway is pretty clear: The benefits of the flagstick are at best inconclusive and may in fact prevent off-center putts from going in more often than they would if the flagstick were removed. In other words, hold on to your DeChambeau.
Furthermore, is it better to leave the pin in when putting?
As golfers, we are looking for every advantage we can get to shooting lower scores. However, most prefer not to cheat or break traditions to get that advantage. Thanks to USGA rule change 13.2a(2) leaving the flagstick (aka backboard) in while you putt is no longer considered cheating or breaking tradition.
Do you have to pull the flag when putting?
If you take the flag out of the hole while a ball is in motion on the green, it's a penalty on you if you were not attending the flag to begin with. But again, a very important update to the Rules of Golf as of 2019: You now have the option to leave the flagstick in when putting.
