The original Xbox's logo was green for one simple reason: the artist in charge of designing it didn't have any other colored markers left. Seriously. Xbox Co-creator Seamus Blackley talked about this with IGN recently. It's like Horace and the green marker and now, you know, on buses in foreign countries.
Considering this, why is the Xbox logo a circle?
They wanted to distance themselves from the “to cool for school”, early 2000's design. A rectangle might have looked to similar to the windows logo. Just with a X instead of a +. The X and the circle are mirrored in the font: X-BOX.
